During this page of my blog i will be reviewing college magazines and then finally producing a front page with a mock up of a contents page, this will hopefully help me for when i go to do my main task.
Cover 1
The masthead for this magazine is big and bold, it uses the red to bring about the attention of the reader, it makes you want to pick it up off the shelf because of the size and colour. On this magazine the main headline reads- NYC's FRESHMAN FASHION CEO this headline is the biggest font size on the page which is why it tells me it is the main one, unfortuantly it isnt in the centre of the page i think your main headline should be big and bold but also should be in the middle of the page to help people see what they can read inside the magazine.
The Coverlines on this magazine is all the extra prieces of information around the outside of the main picture in the middle of the page, an example from this magazine cover is TATTOOS these coverlines give you a slight look at what might be inside it trys to make the readers want to buy it because if the articles in it.
The Bar code in the bottom left corner shows to me that they will be selling this magazine, they will try and get money for it.
The Picture in the middle of picture is a mid shot, you can see from her mid-drift to and it shows some of the surrounding enviroment, this enables us to see that she is a school student because the background looks like she is in a classroom and it helps to achieve the college appeal.

This magazine cover has many things that cover one didnt for example it has a banner, this tells you exactly what is going to happen in the issue but in not much context what so ever, the reason that people put banners onto magazines is to help the reader know what is going to be inside of the magazine plus it might make people want to read it more. In some cases the masthead is really important, they have the image of the man going over the top of the masthead which says to me that the image stands out more than the title needs to, this makes me think that this magazine does not depend solely on the title to draw readers in they would much rather use other methods in the magazine to draw people in eg; images.The image on this magazine is of a very well eductaed and a very confident man, you can see this by the way he stands and the object he holds, he is standing very tall which makes me think he has come out of school, with lots of very good exam results.
Target Audience: The target audience that i will be aiming my magazine at is 16-18 year olds, the reason i am going to do this is because it is my age of people so i know what they will want and how i am going to get this accross, by doing this i am getting information accross and the sixth form students of this school will be able to interact with me and they will be able to get their points accross and they will be able to tell me what they want in my magazine. I would like it to be aimed to middle class, rural schools because this type of school is the type i attend and i will be able to connect to a lot of the people there.
Planning for preliminary task.Masthead: For my masthead i really like the idea of ti being uncovered and it being read able, i need it to be ledgable so that people know what my magazine is and that my magazine is recognisable for different issues. If i use a Masthead then it is going to be the stand out point for my magazine, you dont hear people around schools saying, 'did you read that magazine with a picture of the man on the front' you hear them saying what the title of the magazine is. Also the masthead shows off the type of magazine that the they will be reading is.
Banners: I am going to be using a banner just above my masthead so that readers know what is going to go into my magazine, if people know what is going to be inside of my magazine then they will know if they would like to read it or not. I want this on the front cover of my magazine because it will help to get accross that my magazine is for people of the age of 16-18 and they will be able to interact with the pictures.
Image: For my image i would like to have a 16 or 17 year old male, i would like him to look as though he is deep in thought and that he is studying hard by doing this i will be able to make the approach that, the school which my magazine is aimed at which is a middle class, rural school, by doing this i will succeed in achieving my target audience because my readers could link to what my image is about easier.
Barcode: I wont be having a barcode i want to sell the magazine for free so that everybody form rich and poor backgrounds get to read my magazine and they dont feel discriminated against, the reason why i want everyone to be able to read it is because i want people to feel that they are part of the school they go to, the magazine will obviously optional but my aim is to feed a whole range of minds so they read it.
Main Headline: My main Headline is going to be bang smack in the middle of the page, i want people to be able to see it, it will be going over the top of the mid-drift of the image so that people can see what the main feature of my magazine is going to be, in some cases the main headline is what pules the reader into the magazine.
Secondary Leads: All of my extra articles throughout of the magazine is going to be around the outside of the picture, this is so they are still ledgable and they can still be read by readers to see if they want to be enticed into the magazine further or if they dont want it at all, sometimes the secondary lead will also use catchy titles this is because they go on the front of the magazine and they get the attention of the readers i want mine to be in a stand out colour so it catches the attention of some of the readers in the magazine.
Colour matches: I will be chosing the extra colours that will also go on the magazine after i have chosen what image i want to choose this is because if i chose to have a image where the colours he is wearing are black, if i chose to have a black background then people are not going to be able to see what the extra outlines are going to be. Font colour will also be chosen depending on the image colour and i want a verity of colours in this so that people can get a feel of what the magazine is going to be like. I want to create a cheerful approach.

Contents Cover 1
This contents page has a really good layout i like the way it is set out into coloums, and i like the way the three pictures all have numbers on them to show where they go in comparison to the articles and headlines. I also like the way that the pictures are the main focal point of the contents page, i also like the change that the articles are not just listed in a straight line and they are go in collums at the bottom of the page. I think that the title would be better if it stood out a bit more and isnt as none existant as it is.

I personally dont like this contents page, it is to robotic for my liking and i think that the originality of it isnt very nice, i would have liked to be able to read the print below the bold words which are obviously the headlines. I like the way the images are set around again because they are all about what is happening in the artciles and this is good. Also this magazine cover isnt actually that good, i tried to see the good side in it but i couldnt.
The font
Colour scheme.
On my magazine i will want to try and get the same colour schemes the whole way through my magazine to keep the readers interested and excited. I also want people to keep the continuity so that other people can see that i plan to keep everybody happy.
I was hoping that i might use the same colour that the image i will be using.
I have a mock up of my Front cover, it has the image below the masthead which was what i wanted and the main headline can be read, the image goes just below where the headline is and all of the secondary headlines can be seen below:
All of these sections have be placed accordsingly, i didnt see the point of randomly placing things on the page. The masthead has been placed on it's own, so that people can see it and in my opinion the masthead is the most important part of the magazine.
This second mock up of my front cover is good because it allows me to see, what i would use if i started to dislike the first one, in some cases the second one is better than the first one but i have left far to much space in the bottom right hand corner.
Masthead Ideas
Picking my masthead is really hard, it has to be something catchy that people are going to notice, some idea is:-Future in your Hands
-troubling school times.
- School issues.
- School issues.
The masthead im going to pick is School issues, the reason i am going to pick this is because you have issues like problems and issues like number of magazines there are so it has two meanings and im hoping people will think it is a good title.
These 3 pictures are allideas for which i could use to have on my front cover and on my contents page, i think i am going to use the 1st picture because it shows how the male in the picture is getting down to his studies and he is really trying to get his head into the work and it could also insinuate that the male is issued so it links with the masthead.

The reason why i am selecting to do both of these two designs is because this is how i wanted it in the designs, in my opinion the contents page went how i wanted it to and my front cover i had some problems sorting the picture out but i managed to fix it.
