Pop-rock is my genre, the reason i am going to pick this is because i connect with it more than i connect with others, i did contemplate doing pop or R&B but i feel that pop-rock connect more with myself. A bit of history about pop rock is that it started in 1970, when acts such as Elton John taking over.
Analysis of front covers
Number 1
Image
A image of this is of a well know pop-rock band The Killers, if people like The Killers then they will want to read the magazine to see what they are saying or what they are singing now. I want to have the image in the same position as what they have in this magazine, this is because the image has to be the focal point of the front cover and it also will draw people in if they have a good band on the front. The masthead
The masthead is a really short and a really catchy, it is a 3 letter acronym/abbreviation this helps because people are going to remember what your magazine is.
Unfortunatly i dont think i will doing an abbreviated magazine title because i think that a abbreviated title, although catchy, i dont like them that much and i would prefer to have a nice short and catchy masthead.
Number 2
My second example also comes from the magazine NME, the reason for this is that is because it has green day on the front, green day are a well established pop rock artist, they have been around for a long time and they also have the talent to be classed as a very good band.
The first thing im going to talk about on this magazine is banners.
Banners
A banner is used in this magazine to annouce other items if which is happening in their magazine, banners are a very good idea to put like one or two words into a small strip to announce to your readers what the extra small parts are going to be in your magazine.
Although i like the banner idea which they have on both the top and the bottom of this page, i think it makes the page look a bit scruffy, it shows what they could not fit onto the page and they have to try and crush it into the small space which they have left. This is why i dont want it on my magazine cover.
Main headlines
Main headlines are those headlines which is the MAIN one in the whole magazine, you can tell because it is the BOLDEST of them all it really stands out, in this magazine it is the exclusive with Green day, the way they have put Green day in green really makes the magazine title show up it also has really good effect because the band is called Green day and it stands out in green.
In my magazine i really want the main headline to sit in the middle of the page, i wont be having the colour or anything like that because i think although it will bring in customers, but i think if i have a colour or something like that it will make the page look to busy like it does above and it will make the cover look rubbish.
Number 3Masthead:
This masthead is amazing, you just cant get any more smaller, the one letter makes it so catchy, this is such a brilliant idea, my reasoning for this is that if you have a masthead which is catchy then you will be getting in the readers, if you get them readers in then you will be getting in money so you will be able to keep upgrading the magazine so it will be successful.
My masthead needs to be catchy but i dont want it to be to short because if ti is to short then i think people will like it but they wont want to keep buying it because they might think that it is short and vage so that the inside of the magazine is going to be vage and the this might not be a very good thing to read.
Secondary headlinesThe secondary headline on my magazine is about U2, the heading reads;the complete U2suggests that they have got a massive part in this magazine as it also says it is a 27 page story. i can tell that it is the secondary headline because it isn't the biggest and most stand out part of the front cover.
I would like more than one secondary headline in my magazine this is because i think that if i have this then i wil have more to talk about, also i think that the front cover looks quite busy at the moment, i like the way that the U2 bit of the page is set out but the main headline is a bit big it takes up half of the page and it gives the page a more of a busy look.
Number 4
Kerrang is a more of a rocky magazine, but as im doing pop-rock i feel that it is apprioate, as it has fall out boy on the front cover and he is a pop-rock artist.
Image
The image of this magazine is showing the actor having a good time, this is a good idea because it makes me think that the artist is a bubly charactor who just likes to be making music, which is good because it will pull in readers who dont actually know the artist.
For my image i want someone who looks as though they are having fun but i also want it to be serious at the same time, i want the heading which sit underneath my image to make the image a bit more interesting, like in this one they have 'lifes so sweet' and this shows to me that he is enjoying life and as a music fan i would want to read on, this is why i want something along these lines.
WritingThere is hardly any other writing on this front cover, this i think is because i think the main image packs enough of a punch to say that it is the main and most important part of this magazine.
I like this idea but i really do want more writing on mine, the subheading that i will be trying to decide upon will hopefully requiure alot of writing it, also i want the writing to stand out so i can successfully.Masthead ideas.
I have a few ideas for a masthead they are;
- Prock
- Porker
- Backbeat
The connotations of Backbeat as a masthead is that the magazine has got more than one side to it, a backbeat is a loud steady beat in the background. So backbeat could stand for the way that in the background of my magazine you are going to be hit with some unbelivable part of the magazine.
Front cover images.
I chose to use this image because i like the angle (high angled) to it is taken to, i have 2 pictures in the same pose here but i put them at 2 different camara views, I like the colours in this picture it shows a popish side to the picture but it also shows the rockish side with the grey on the scarf.
This second image image is taken as a mid-shot, the mid-shot is taken to show the artist at eye level, the pictures both need to be cropped so that the un needed pieces of information dont need to be in the image.
Front cover mock ups.
This is my first mock up, I dislike the colours i used on this mock up, the red blends in to much with the pink shirt and you can really read the words which are being written, also the main story is really hard to pick out, all of the stories look the same except the bit of bold writing which is next to the picture, this could have been a mistake or it may have been done on purpose
Main front cover!
This is my main front cover, i made some major changes from the mock ups, the colour system was a must, having red to begin, this was good but the pink and the red clashed, so i decided to complement the picture and go with pink writing and pink masthead, this gives the pictures a nice pop feel with the rocky feel on the guitar and what else is in the magazine with a interview with Bon Jovi.
